In the News: Anti-depressants & Sedation Under Fire.
The Homeopathic Alternative.
• Depression affects approximately 14 million adults in America today and use of anti-anxiety drugs is soaring.
• In children as young a 6 months these toxic and dangerous drugs are being administered.
• Up to 37,000,000 Americans, or one out of every six Americans, most of them women, regularly used emotion controlling medica l drugs in 2011.
• 5,000 died from psychoactive drug treatments. 600 to 1,000 were lobotomized, most of them women.
• Antidepressants were the third most common prescription drug taken by Americans of all ages in 2005–2008 and the most frequently used by persons aged 18–44 years .
• From 1988–1994 through 2005–2008, the rate of antidepressant use in the United States among all ages increased nearly 400%.
This past week in the news:
• Last week, ABC news reported about the 18 month old who died from adult doses of sedative given during a teeth cleaning.
• On Tuesday, Dr. Drew the beloved Addiction specialist on television has been found guilty of accepting over $275,000 to lie about the anti depressant Wellbutrin (also sold as the smoking cessation drug Zyban).
Earlier this year Antidepressants were found not more effective than placebos in treating mild and severe depression'
"Dr Tim Kendall, deputy-director of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Research Unit, said the findings were 'fantastically important'. A group of experts analysed 47 clinical trials using data released under Freedom of Information rules by the US Food and Drug Administration. The researchers looked at four commonly- used antidepressants and the clinical trials submitted to gain licensing approval. They included antidepressants regularly prescribed in Britain – fluoxetine (Prozac), venlafaxine (Efexor) and paroxetine (Seroxat). They found little evidence of benefit from analysing both unpublished and published data from the drug firms." How much evidence is enough?
We see these facts and yet we still seek the prescription drugs to ease our anxiety, calm our fears and resolve the emotional dis-harmony we have.
I ask, as may you. "Isn't this enough to turn us off the drugs, the sedation?"
Clearly no. And why?
Because people are suffering.
The reasons for this overriding free flowing and frightening anxiety is multi-layered.
There are alternative forms of care:
- Bach Flower Essences
- GAPS diet
- Proper nutrition
- Psychotherapy and amino acid therapies
all which play a role to support the inner health of those living with depression anxiety and mental illness.
Can we blame the patient for seeking relief? Of course not. But we can consider alternative paths to relief.
Why we seek alternatives & why we don’t.
Questions we must ask:
Speaking for myself my family and my clients: I don't like suffering and don't believe in it.
I believe that we can learn through disease, but not that it is the only way.
I believe we were born to be well and sometimes becoming well may be the lesson. But being well is the objective. As a people we seem to have lowered our expectations for health. We settle for managing chronic illness. We get a ribbon, join a club and are rewarded by our camaraderie with our fellow suffers. Not because we want to per se, but because we have become accustomed to it.
It has been tiring.
We have been beaten down by the private financial interests of a for profit medical system.
Why do we take medicine that is damaging to us?
We are malnourished by an unethical food system whose alliances with government has made the purest food illegal.
How can medicine heal us if we are worse for taking it?
How can we feel nourished while we wonder if the food will kill us?
I wonder if we feel these contradictions on a soul level. Perhaps these are partly responsible for our anxiety
There are alternatives. We have choices. We have a huge variety of healing support available to us.
My vision and hope is that homeopathy and pharmaceutical medical care find a balanced approach to patient care, putting the patient's healing before profit. In an ideal scenario, should a patient, who is on medication find success with homeopathy, and their symptoms lessen, their doctor would in turn, adjust their medication.
I must state here for the record, that as a hompepathic educator and consultant, I do not prevent, diagnose, treat or cure any disease.
For those hoping to ''get off meds" it is a process that must be undertaken with the utmost care.
When we take meds we are ingesting poisons. The toll that these take on us is frightening, but not as much as the mental and emotional realities of panic attacks, depression, & anxiety.
The scientific studies demonstrating homeopathy effectiveness in treating depression.
As reported by Dana Ullman in the Huffington Press in January, this year, there are scientific studies demonstrating homeopathy’s efficacy compared to antidepressant drugs.
"Jonathan Davidson, MD, a professor of psychiatry at Duke University, conducted a small study of adults with major depression, social phobia, or panic disorder. He found that 60% of the patients responded favorably to homeopathic treatment.(9) When one recognizes the considerable safety of homeopathic medicines and the benefits that some patients get from this safer method of treatment, it is remarkable that the majority of psychiatrists and psychologists do not yet refer appropriate patients to homeopaths prior to prescribing powerful conventional drugs for them."
"A clinical outcome study of interest involved 14 physicians of the United Kingdom's Faculty of Homeopathy (13 NHS GPs and 3 private practitioners) who treated a wide variety of people with chronic ailments.(10) The outcome scores from 958 individual patient conditions having two or more appointments found that 75.9% experienced a "positive outcome," 14.7% had no change, and 4.6% experienced deterioration in health. Patients with the highest positive scores (over 50% of patients who self-scored a +2 or +3 on a 7-point Likert scale from -3 to +3) were achieved in the treatment of anxiety, catarrh, colic, cystitis, depression, eczema, irritable bowel syndrome, and PMS.
A total of 63.6% of patients with depression self-scored a +2 or +3 result from homeopathic treatment."
Homeopathy is recognized as a safe, viable alternative to antidepressants.
